Born from a year of upheaval and transition, Arising explores the ever-shifting, fluid nature of our inner world. Through 8 paintings, it invites you into the liminal spaces we all encounter at various points in our lives – between grief and growth, between holding on and letting go, and between who we once were and who we’re becoming. It serves as a reminder that transformation is a quiet and ongoing process unfolding inside all of us, and that even in our most uncertain moments, something beautiful is always arising.
A lot changed for me in a very short amount of time last winter. After experiencing what felt like a complete upheaval of my life, it felt impossible to reimagine my future from the same places that defined my past and I turned to traveling to feel inspired again. During this time, I watched a lot of sunsets and sunrises by myself, all over the world — on the coast of Thailand, from the rooftop of my hotel in Oaxaca, in the mountains of Bogota. These moments with myself were my ritual of grounding in a time of untethering, and are what would inspire the essence of Arising.
The works from Arising are not tethered to specific places or moments but are rather, ambient vignettes of shifting internal landscapes. Through swirling, ethereal patterns in soft, luminous colors that evoke the sky and ocean, each painting asks you to slow down and be fully present with the currents of change. They capture the delicate interplay of dissolution and creation, of chaos and calm, and of unraveling and reassembling – offering a visual language for the tides of life. The choice to paint these on small, 8” x 10” canvases is also an intentional one: the minis are ode to the feeling of smallness against expansive backdrops, which is a contrast that often brought me comfort during this period of transition. They hold entire worlds in their small frames, reminding us of the vastness within even the most minute moments we experience.
Once I settled into my studio in Brooklyn last month, creating this series was both an act of reflection and integration for me. It was my way of metabolizing my past year before putting down new roots – a bridge between the person who left and the one who returned. When you experience these works, my hope is that they bring you to the thresholds of your own experiences of transformation. They are mirrors for anyone navigating the push and pull of their own unfolding, where uncertainty opens into possibility and the beauty of what was and what will be quietly intertwines.
Arising is my first and only series of 2024 — there will never be prints of these so each piece is one of one. Each painting is hand stretched, signed, sealed, and comes framed in a maple floating frame, ready to hang.
